Here is a grouping of some of my all-time favorite covers I created as the designer of the Buckeye Sports Bulletin. I wrote for and helped edited the BSB, as well, but my creativity really came through in the publication’s design. Scan through images of some of my favorite covers below.
My first “experiment” with a BSB front page. I took what the writer wanted to convey and I tried to make “puzzle pieces” to help tell the story.
One of my all-time favorite covers. I didn’t really love any of the photos I had for this cover story, so I tried to come up with something different.
BSB only has one issue in December, so it’s easier to get creative with covers because you have more time. This is one of those examples. I took a picture we had of the Rose Bowl facade, cut it out and placed it in front of old Rose Bowl pictures we had in our archives.
Another example of a December cover. We were fortunate to get photos from the University of Texas, so I was able to do something fun with key players.
This wouldn’t be a favorite of Ohio State fans, but it’s one of my favorites because it appeared on the follow week’s episode of ESPN’s College GameDay. My covers made it on GameDay twice, the other coming during an ESPN interview with Urban Meyer.
We turned this issue around super fast. Jim Tressel was fired on Memorial Day, and the deadline for this big issue was right after that. So this is what I came up with for the cover.
Here’s the center spread I created for that issue – a timeline of Tressel’s tenure at Ohio State with photos from our archives and old BSB covers.
This is my favorite BSB cover. Recruiting issues were tough because the artwork we would have would be poor – bad photos, poor resolution. A lightning strike of creativity struck that week, giving me an idea that allowed me to use the not-so-hot art and create something cool that perfectly fit the writer’s story.
